1759. Mauritius is in the hands of the Kingdom of France. Massamba and Mati, two slaves in the plantation of Eugène Larcenet, live a life of fear and toil. He dreams for his daughter to be freed, while she longs to leave the green hell of sugarcane. One night, she runs away. Madame La Victoire, a famous slave huntress, is tasked with tracking her down. Massamba has no choice but to escape from the plantation in his turn. By doing so, he becomes a “maroon”, a fugitive who breaks forever with the colonial order…
In het jaar 1759 is Mauritius in handen van de Franse kolonisten. De bevolking die tot slaaf gemaakt wordt, leeft in angst en zwoegt op de suikerrietplantages. Zo ook het tienermeisje Mati en haar vader Massamba. Mati weigert haar lot te aanvaarden en ontvlucht de plantage, op zoek naar het deel van het eiland waar een gemeenschap van voortvluchtigen zich zou ophouden. De plantagehouder huurt intussen de meedogenloze Madame La Victoire in om Mati op te sporen. Massamba heeft geen andere keuze dan zelf te ontsnappen om zijn dochter als eerste terug te vinden.
1759. Isle de France (actuelle île Maurice). ? Massamba et Mati, esclaves dans la plantation d’Eugène Larcenet, vivent dans la peur et le labeur. Lui rêve que sa fille soit affranchie, elle de quitter l’enfer vert de la canne à sucre. ? Une nuit, elle s’enfuit. Madame La Victoire, célèbre chasseuse d’esclaves, est engagée pour la traquer. Massamba n’a d’autre choix que de s’évader à son tour. Par cet acte, il devient un “marron”, un fugitif qui rompt à jamais avec l’ordre colonial.
