At the height of the Cold War, Fatherland centers on the relationship between the writer Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika—actress, writer and rally driver—as they embark on a road trip in a black Buick cruiser across a Germany in ruins.
In het jaar 1949 onderneemt de Duitse schrijver Thomas Mann met zijn dochter Erika een roadtrip. De reis voert hen doorheen hun geruïneerde vaderland. Samen vertrekken ze richting ballingschap dat hen van een door de Verenigde Staten gedomineerde Frankfurt tot het door de Sovjet gecontroleerde Weimar brengt.
